This is something you would never see on the TV game show “Wheel of Fortune”. What is the Most Holy Trinity on this “Trinity Sunday”? First, we must ask ourselves – why study this? The most basic reason is that truth is food and truth is light. And God revealed His truth to us. Now then, revealed truth is food. A peculiarity of food is that it nourishes only those that eat it. Let us take a few moments of our day and (re)learn about the Most Holy Trinity. Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we praise you we give you thanks, open our minds and hearts to understand a little bit more about you every day.
One more reason to learn another facet about God: knowledge servers love, and each new thing learned about God is a new reason for loving Him.
Let us outline the basic doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity:
- In the one divine nature, there are three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- No one of the persons is either of the others, each is wholly himself.
- The Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God.
- They are not three Gods but one God.
A summary is this: “Three persons in one nature”. Nature is the source of our operations; the person does them. What is the nature of God? The infinite. As a contrast, what is our nature? Human and limited.
God the Father uttered a Word, as described in the Gospel of John in the first 18 verses. What could have God uttered? Only the idea of God himself. The only begotten Son. And between the Father and the Son there is the pure, holy, unadulterated, totally giving Love. This love is so real that it is a person – the Holy Spirit, proceeding from the Father and the Son.
A quick reminder, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are each fully God – they possess the one nature called God – they do not share it. How could the infinite be shared? The Father is God, the Son is God and the Holy Spirit is God, yet they are three separate persons.
This is mystery, not contradiction.
How can this apply to us? Very well actually. When, in marriage the Man and the Woman come together in marriage and their love is so real that in nine months it has to be named.
O the wonder of God! He lets mankind share in the infinite. He has given us such a model. Praise you Holy Trinity. Praise you Father, Son and Holy Spirit! Let us give honor and glory to God, and thank him for his revealed truth.
Much of the theory of the Most Holy Trinity written here was borrowed from F. J. Sheed’s wonderful book “Theology for Beginners”.
